Through precision closed-die drop forging and open-die press forging, hot metal billets are compressed under immense tonnages to align the metallurgical grain structure continuously with the part geometry, yielding superior structural integrity compared to cast or bar-machined components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Closed-die (drop) forging uses custom-machined precision dies that enclose the hot metal, forming complex near-net shapes with tight tolerances, making it ideal for medium-to-high volume production. Open-die forging shapes metal between flat or simple curved dies without enclosing it, which is ideal for very large shafts, rings, and low-volume custom forgings.

During the hot forging process, the metal's internal grain structure is refined and forced to flow continuously along the part's shape. This continuous grain flow eliminates the internal porosity found in castings and avoids cutting across grain boundaries like machining from bar stock, yielding far superior impact strength and fatigue life.
